Frequently Asked Questions about NetSuite

When you’re contemplating a change in financial management systems, it’s normal to have a lot of questions. We’ve done our best to sort out the most common questions and provide answers. Do you have a question that we haven’t addressed below? Please ask us!


Purchasing NetSuite

We don’t mean to be cagey here, for sure. The hard part here is that you and the company next door to you could each implement NetSuite, and it will cost you each something different – because your businesses are different. Quite honestly, if we (or any other NetSuite implementer, for that matter) published pricing on our website, we’d be doing you a disservice, because every single client has different needs that could and will impact your overall investment.

As far as software costs, as we’ve mentioned elsewhere, that’s dependent on a number of factors – number of users, NetSuite edition, and the possible need for any add-on modules.

For professional services, it may be that your needs can be met by a standard implementation (our Road Ready Bundle), which can keep your costs very manageable and predictable. If you need a bit more, we’ve created other bundles to, once again, keep costs predictable. While we can’t speak for others, with Adaptive Road, you will know before you ever sign anything the exact scope of work, what’s included, and what your investment will be, well before your implementation begins.


As humans, we sometimes focus on price more than we focus on value, and we put price into context we understand. For that reason, we look at return-on-investment (ROI) as the real indicator of whether the NetSuite solution is expensive or not. If you could purchase something for $10, but it would save you $20, would you buy it?

No limit! If you have up to ten users, NetSuite Limited Edition might be right for you. NetSuite is geared for organizations with 11 to 50 users, and NetSuite Enterprise Edition for organization with more than 50 users, with no upper limit. And, should your organization grow, changing editions to increase the number of users available is a simple task, which your implementer should facilitate for you.

Add-on modules deliver additional functionality for specialized needs without the need for customization. While it is possible to do what these modules do by customizing your specific NetSuite environment, it is far more cost effective to take advantage of add-on modules that are already developed – when they meet your needs, of course.

There are many different add-on modules available. For our clients, we identify when an add-on module is a good business decision during the requirements discussions and project scoping, so you’ll know early if an add-on module will benefit your business.

Your software license is provided by NetSuite, under their standard Terms of Service.

You will sign a NetSuite Subscription Agreement, and you’ll pay NetSuite directly. For our clients, we facilitate that process, ensuring that your NetSuite quote/proposal contains everything you need (and not one thing more). The software agreement is between you and NetSuite directly.

NetSuite Support

In the first place, that would be pretty unusual. NetSuite (and Adaptive Road) have very high customer retention rates. So it might be worth a conversation with us before deciding to go in a different direction.

But, if you must, you must. You have a few options available to you for getting your data out of your NetSuite environment:

  • NetSuite has a feature called “Export all data.” This is limited but might work for you.
  • You could purchase SuiteConnect, an add-on module that lets you export all of your data.
  • There’s a function called Full CSV Export (but it won’t have all of your transactions)
  • Write saved searches to export everything.

Overall, we recommend talking to your implementer about your options so you can choose the most efficient, expedient, and cost-effective option for your needs.

Your implementer is (or should be), provided that they are a Certified NetSuite Solution Provider, as we are. We can’t speak for all implementers, of course. Our clients enjoy a personal level of service and we are the liaison between you and NetSuite – so you never have to call them directly for support. NetSuite in the Cloud

Yes. NetSuite is the only on-demand solution provider to guarantee availability, with a promise of 99.5% uptime. During the past 12 months (as of this writing) NetSuite is running at 99.986% uptime.The 0.014% is accounted for as planned downtime for essential maintenance. See the figures in real time here.

YES! The safety of your data is the number one priority of NetSuite, and their cloud environment is optimized to provide the best security possible. Your data is always YOUR data, and it is protected by 128-bit domestic SSL encryption as well as 64-bit international SSL encryption – plus there are different passwords needed for the system itself and your database.

NetSuite’s commitment to your security means that your data is safe.

Check if your company has a second internet provider, as many companies do provide that important back-up. Even though NetSuite contractually commits to a 99.5% uptime (and has historically maintained 99.8%!), that doesn’t help you if your own internet provider decides to take a vacation.

You also have options – you can keep entering using Excel, and push what you’ve entered into NetSuite once you reconnect. And you can use the mobile version temporarily while your internet provider is busy getting service restored.

NetSuite Implementation

Yes, NetSuite is very rich in terms of features and function, and it’s not unusual to see certain functionality NOT implemented initially. What we’ve learned over time is that, as businesses grow and change, having that functionality available can be very valuable.

Speaking only for ourselves, we’ll help you get the most of your NetSuite software with the exact features and functionality you need at this point in your business. And we’ll make an agreement with you – talk to us about your needs as they change, and we’ll let you know if you already have that functionality available to you.


A typical NetSuite implementation can be done fairly quickly – usually in two to six months. Obviously, the more complexity, the longer it will take. We understand that the timeline is critical to your planning process, and that’s why we include timeline estimates in your proposal.

That said, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that the timeline isn’t just OUR timeline. There are many aspects of an implementation process that depend on YOUR people as well as ours. That’s why it’s important that we agree to the timeline – and form an implementation team that includes your team members – right up front.

Any time you implement a new mission-critical application in your organization, you’ll experience change. Change is good, and understanding how to deal with it is even better. Once your implementation is complete, it will be important for your users to fully understand the new system – and, candidly, you want them to be enthusiastic supporters of the big decision you made to move to NetSuite. Be sure you get whatever training your implementation partner is offering, and operational support for a time after the new systems goes live can be a real blessing to your users when it comes to actually doing their work.

This is a hard question to answer, and it really depends on what you and your NetSuite implementer agreed to as a scope of work for your implementation. Scope is driven by requirements, so how do you arrive at your requirements? We can’t answer for every NetSuite implementation partner out there. Our clients typically see business processes that operate more efficiently, consolidated reporting, real-time information, and a host of other improvements – and again, it’s all driven by scope, which is driven by requirements – which are decided up front, before your implementation ever begins.

The other side of this coin is that you and your team must be prepared to invest your time as well, in learning, understanding, and mastering the elements of NetSuite that pertain to your business. Without that commitment on your part, your NetSuite implementation won’t have its best chance at success.

NetSuite Administration

Many companies do just fine without a full-time NetSuite administrator; someone in the finance department normally rises as a bit of an expert through the implementation and training and can easily be a resource to others. However, if you have a lot of moving pieces – many modules, several integrations, frequent projects, etc., a NetSuite administrator can be a good investment. Hiring a contract admin can also be an option, if an administrator is needed. Your NetSuite partner should be able to help you identify whether or not you would benefit from a NetSuite administrator.
